Questions And Auxiliary Verbs ¶
46. Questions (1) ¶
- In Questions, we usually put the first auxiliary verb(AV) before the subject(S)
t) S + AV -> AV + S
I can -> Can I?
ex) What can I do?
B. In simple present questions, we use do/does(do/does) t) you live -> do you live?
ex) Do you live near here?
In simple past questions, we use did
t) you sold -> did you sell?
ex) Did you sell your car?
But do not use do/does/did if who/what/which is the subject of the sentence.
Compare :
ex1) who object
Emma phoned somebody. -> Who did Emma phone?
ex2) who subject
Somebody phoned Emma. -> Who phoned Emma?
